Le chanteur de rock Alice Cooper a proposé une chanson pour le film mais elle a été recalée car celle de Lulu avait déjà été sélectionnée. Cooper a publié cette chanson dans son album Muscle of Love. Tony Bramwell, qui travaillait pour la société d'édition musicale Hilary Music du producteur Harry Saltzman, voulait qu'Elton John ou Cat Stevens interprète la chanson-titre. Cependant, à cette époque, les producteurs produisaient les films à tour de rôle ; Albert R. Broccoli, dont c'était le tour de produire, rejeta les suggestions de Bramwell. Les paroles de la chanson de Lulu ont été écrites par Don Black et ont été décrites comme "ridicules", "ineptes" et "un long flot de cochonneries", en raison de leurs insinuations sexuelles.

En outre, des versions piano et jazz de la chanson sont jouées dans le labyrinthe de Scaramanga, constituant donc des sons diégétiques du film.
