009 is the code-name of an unnamed fictional intelligence operative of the 'Double-O' ('00') Branch, an ultra-covert Black Ops unit within the British Secret Intelligence Service (SIS/MI6). He spent time acting a servant under the name of Goliath in Acme press and Dark Horse Comics' 1991 James Bond graphic novel Serpent's Tooth. To date, across the James Bond franchise as a whole, there have been five individuals who have held the number 009.
009 disappeared while on a mission relating to some loose ends left from a submarine explosion five years prior. He was last seen by his local contacts heading to Lima to investigate "Paradiso Industries Limited", a biomedical research and genetics firm under the control of a mysterious man going by the name "Indigo". While in Indigo's custody, 009's blood was taken and used in his experiments. As a part of Indigo's delusions of recreating the world, 009's mind and appearance were altered to resemble a neanderthal and being forced to act as Indigo's manservant and bodyguard under the name "Goliath".
Bond had been against 009's being given the assignment, and his hunch that the soviets were not involved were proven viable by 009's having been killed in Peru. He was then given the assignment, and eventually tracked Indigo to his mobile Eden complex. Attempting to make Goliath stronger, Indigo gave him several injections, and the man later delivered his master drinks in bed, which he dropped into a alligator pit, to Indigo's ire. Armed with a shotgun, Indigo gave Goliath the order to kill Bond, who recognized 009 even through his mutations. Begging his colleague to remember who he was, 009 briefly regained control of his actions before being stabbed in the back and killed by Indigo.
