Artyom Nikolayevich Chekov (Russian: Артём Николаевич Чехов) was a intelligence operative and assassin of the Russian counterintelligence agency, SMERSH. The character served as a minor antagonist in Dynamite Entertainment's 2020 James Bond graphic novel, Reflections of Death.

Biography[]

Artyom Nikolayevich Chekov was a member of the operations and executions section, department two, of SMERSH. He was likely involved in a plot to corrupt the highest levels of British government through extortion, blackmail and bribery. On 2nd November 2020, Chekov flew into London City Airport by private jet and was placed under surveillance by MI6. He was aware of his observer, James Bond, and later that evening lured the spy into an ambush at a construction site. Bond, unarmed due to the so-called "hard rule"[1], quickly deprived the assassin of his MP-443 Grach and a violent altercation ensued - culminating in 007 throwing a knife into Chekov's left eye. The killing resulted in an investigatory meeting of the Joint Intelligence Committee on 5th November, chaired by Sir Cecil, who was secretly a high-ranking SMERSH agent code-named "Architect". Following the unearthing of damning evidence and the dismantling of his spy ring, the chairman was executed by 007 using Chekov's pistol - making it look like SMERSH had killed one of their own.

Trivia[]

  • Named after Russian author Anton Chekhov, "Chekhov's Gun" is a literary principle whereby every element of a story must be necessary, and superfluous elements ought to be removed.
