Blackclaw's Doomsday Plot is one of two original "James Bond 007 Adventure Storybooks" published in North America in 1985 by PlayValue Books, under license from Danjaq and Glidrose Publications. Its plot involves a sinister plot by SMERSH to build a super-laser. The 8" x 8" paperback book was written by John Albano, illustrated by Rudy Nebres, colored by Judith Fast, with cover artwork by Howard Bender and Sal Trapani.
Plot[]
The book begins with British agent James Bond uncovering cargo bound for a SMERSH laser weapon project. They plan to achieve world domination by rendering the warheads of the superpowers useless. After a failed assassination attempt, which Bond escapes using a Miniature Oxygen Tank, he is sent by his superior M to destroy the weapon and rescue kidnapped scientist, Dr. Margaret Manfield. As he follows a cargo ship to the villains' floating, man-made Atlantic island, the periscope of 007's midget submarine is spotted by super-villain, Blackclaw. After snooping around, 007 is captured and thrown in a cell with Manfield. Blackclaw hopes that he will persuade her to work on the weapon. The spy escapes using Q Branch equipment and sabotages the laser with adhesive Button Bombs primed with a ten-minute fuse. Driven towards insanity by the prospect of failure, Blackclaw brawls with 007 and is eventually defeated. Bond and Margaret escape the island by the convertible sub/speedboat as the explosives detonate - destroying the island.

Trivia[]
- The back of the PlayValue books advertised a total of four James Bond storybooks. However, despite apparently being created, Operation Big Brain and Target: 007 were never published.[1]
- With their quest for world domination and hinted rivalry with the Cold War superpowers, the storybook SMERSH appears to be closer in nature to SPECTRE than the Soviet murder aparat of Ian Fleming's novels.
