Blue Diamond was founded in New York State circa 1950 by South Korean immigrant Sin Jai-Seong, utilizing funds derived from the company's namesake - priceless (and extremely rare) blue diamonds, given to him by his paternal grandmother. The business is ostensibly a legitimate recruitment and construction business specializing in low-grade workers in transit, construction and sanitation. A very large number of people working in the New York transit system were recruited by Blue Diamond. According to the British Secret Service, the company has no associations, criminal or otherwise. By 1957,[1] Blue Diamond has cornered the market in cheap labour, especially among Koreans, Puerto Ricans, Jews, and Greeks. With 20 cents taken for every dollar earned, the company has added to Sin's already exceptional wealth.[2] Among other properties owned by the firm is a heavy plant storage compound just outside Paterson, New Jersey,[3] and workshops at the rapid transit yard at Coney Island, New York City.

Blue Diamond plays a large part in Sin Jai-Seong's scheme to destroy the U.S. space program on behalf of the Soviets. During assembly of the Vanguard space rocket, a German supervisor was bribed by one of Sin's operatives to sabotage its propulsion system. During the resulting malfunction and self-destruct, Sin hoped to stage a fake debris crash in New York City by destroying the Empire State Building with a subterranean bomb, moved by his employees in the New York City Subway.[4] Adding to the scheme's authenticity, he constructed the upper-half of a replica Vanguard at Blue Diamond's New Jersey compound, which would be found among the carnage. In addition to being paid by the Russians, Blue Diamond would greatly profit from the reconstruction work. Sin's scheme gradually unravels, attracting the attention of James Bond and U.S. Treasury agent, Jeopardy Lane, who investigate the compound. Both are taken prisoner and 007 is buried alive by Blue Diamond employees. He escapes and pursues Sin's subway train loaded with C4 plastic explosives[5] and the replica Vanguard. 007 disables the bomb, derails the train using makeshift grenades, and eventually kills Sin. Following its founder's death, his people began scattering. A raid on the Blue Diamond depot had found the place virtually empty.[6]
