Map showing the proximate location of Paterson, New Jersey, relative to New York City.

The Blue Diamond Construction Depot was a fictional heavy plant storage compound owned and operated by low-grade recruitment and construction firm, Blue Diamond, and located on the outskirts of Paterson, New Jersey, United States.[1] Secretly, the compound was a site for constructing a replica Vanguard space rocket in a Soviet plot to destroy the U.S. space program. The location appears in Anthony Horowitz's 2015 James Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis.

History[]

One of many similar American depots owned by wealthy businessman and SMERSH associate, Sin Jai-Seong (Aka. Jason Sin), the Paterson compound was once owned by a silk manufacturer who had emigrated from London, England.[2] The facility was rectangular, at least 200 yds (183 m) in length, and was dotted with metal poles supporting night vision cameras and arc lights. It was surrounded by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire and a single-storey office, brick with a large observation window, guarded the entrance. The left side of the compound was dominated by a huge corrugated iron warehouse, with a soaring zinc chimney and massive sliding doors. Opposite, there were temporary offices and living quarters built like Nissen huts, a car park with around a hundred cars, and an administration block. Overlooking the central courtyard was an elegant white two-storey nineteenth century house modeled on the home of the English poet John Keats.[1] As with Sin's German property, inside, the replica house had the appearance of decrepitude and abandonment, aside from being well lit and air-conditioned.[2]

During 1957,[3] the upper-half of a replica Vanguard space rocket was constructed in the compound's warehouse. It would be used in a scheme to destroy the U.S. space program for the Soviets by staging a fake rocket crash in the middle of Manhattan, New York. Eventually, the scheme unravels, attracting the attention of James Bond and U.S. Treasury agent Jeopardy Lane, who trace Sin to the compound and investigate. During their infiltration, Lane is caught on a security camera and recognized. 007 is subsequently captured and imprisoned. Sin brings them to the replica Keats House and dines with them, recounting his life story and explaining his scheme. Concluding, he tries to force 007 to select the means of his execution from the deck of Hanafuda, but is frustrated when the spy picks one of the three blank cards by sleight of hand. Sin randomly chooses a death for him - to be buried alive. 007 is buried in a wooden coffin-sized box. He narrowly escapes and showers, before pursuing Sin. Following the villain's death, a raid on the Blue Diamond depot finds it virtually empty.[4] Subsequently, the authorities discover two unidentified individuals who had also been buried alive.[5][4]
