Robert Wentworth John Holness (12 November 1928 – 6 January 2012), or Bob Holness was a South African-born actor and TV presenter, who worked mostly in the UK, where he was best known for presenting the young adult quiz show Blockbusters. He was one of the earliest people to play James Bond, predating Sean Connery, he was beaten by Barry Nelson's TV adaptation. However in Nelson's version James Bond was American, and Holness was the first to play him as a British character as in the books.
Bond Involvement[]
The first radio dramatisation of a 007 novel was Moonraker, with Bob Holness providing the voice of Bond, and was variously reported to have aired on South African radio in either 1955, 1956, 1957 or 1958.[1] No extant copies are known to exist and the adaptation was possibly not authorised by Fleming or his agents[1]
