Buttercup McTarry was the pseudonym of a fictional Smersh agent masquerading as a daughter of the late "MI5" head, Lord McTarry. Portrayed by British actress Angela Scoular, the character appeared in the 1967 parody spy film, Casino Royale.
Biography[]
Buttercup was one of a dozen female Smersh agents involved in "Smersh Plan B" - a scheme to destroy the reputation of their celibate, upstanding spy nemesis, Sir James Bond. After the sudden death of Lord McTarry, the head of the British secret service, Buttercup was dispatched to the Laird's Scottish residence alongside her handler Agent Mimi and ten fellow honeytraps. Donning a Scottish brogue, she posed as one of the youngest of McTarry's daughters, and awaited the arrival of the condolence-bearing Sir James. Later that evening she bathed with him, and made an unsuccessful attempt to seduce the spy.
Buttercup has an impressive knowledge of anatomy, suggesting she has undergone some kind of medical training. She claims to be 17.
Trivia[]
- Angela Scoular was one of several Casino Royale actresses who subsequently went on to star in an EON Productions James Bond film. She portrayed Ruby Bartlett in the 1969 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
- Buttercup's Scottish accent is extremely bad. It is not clear if this is because Buttercup is posing as Scottish, or if it is down to the production.
