Captain Carlton Towers is a taxi driver and agent of the British secret service, "MI5". Portrayed by British actor Bernard Cribbins, the character appeared in the 1967 parody spy film, Casino Royale.
Biography[]
Carlton Towers who was apparently a former captain in the British Army, was later an intelligence operative employed by the Foreign Office. He posed as a London black cab driver and was responsible for assisting fellow agent Mata Bond in her infiltration of International Mother's Help in Berlin, a front organisation for a Smersh-run spy school. The pair successfully prevented Smersh agent Le Chiffre from generating funds via an "art" auction.
Behind the Scenes[]
- Carlton Towers' name recalls the early Boulting Brothers' Spy Spoof Carlton Browne of the F.O. i.e. Foreign Office, as well as the British theme park Alton Towers.
- Since Sir James Bond has designated all agents as "James Bond 007" to confuse the enemy, Carlton also likely shares the name.
