Department V was a fictional Soviet counterintelligence agency and spiritual successor to James Bond's old enemies, SMERSH. The organisation first appeared in John Gardner's 1983 James Bond continuation novel, Icebreaker, and was subsequently replaced by Department Eight of Directorate S.
