Dr. Margaret Manfield was a noted scientist who was kidnapped by SMERSH operative, Blackclaw, to work on their laser weapon development project. The organisation plans to achieve world domination by rendering the superpowers' nuclear warheads useless. Held captive on Blackclaw's island, she is joined in her cell by British agent James Bond, who was sent to rescue her, but found himself also captured. Blackclaw plans on using 007 to persuade her to work on the weapon. Once left alone, 007 escapes using Q Branch equipment and sabotages the laser with adhesive button-bombs primed with ten-minute fuses. Blackclaw brawls with 007 and is eventually overcome. Bond and Margaret escape the island in Bond's convertible submarine/speedboat as the explosives detonate - completely destroying Blackclaw's island. The book ends with the pair casually drifting along, relaxing on the deck of the boat.
