The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI for short) is the central criminal police of the United States federal government, which investigates particularly serious crimes that cross state borders. It operates under the United States Department of Justice.
The FBI is also tasked in intelligence-related operations, since the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is not allowed to operate in the United States under counterintelligence jurisdiction. The FBI is also tasked with maintaining national security with the National Security Agency (NSA) and is responsible for training the national Hostage Rescue Team (HRT, sometimes FBI HRT) elite tactical units.
The FBI has sporadic appearances in the in James Bond media, first appearing the novel version of Live and Let Die. FBI generally only appears in the Bond stories that take place in the United States, with them appearing most consistently in the Bond continuation novels by John Gardner.
