Plot[]
The story begins with M severely reprimanding 005 over a bungled mission. He receives an ominous rubber bullet in the mail and travels to Belfast, Northern Ireland to meet with a hostile acquaintance from his time in the British Army - loyalist paramilitary head, Sammy Wells. Wells blackmails M into acquiring the locations of former-IRA members, supposedly out of a need for justice. He meets with one of Wells' associates (Aaron Abernathy) who informs him that he actually plans to sell the information to the highest bidder. M phones Moneypenny for a favour and is accosted in the phone box by several armed Republican youths. He disarms their leader and tells them to convey a message. The next day he meets with Wells and is given a handover location. He checks in with Moneypenny again and arranges a contingency plan; discovering that Abernathy has been murdered.
M meets with Wells at The Dark Hedges near Ballymoney. It is revealed that during the Troubles in Northern Ireland (c. 1969-98), Wells served as a Major in the British Army and was the commanding officer of the young "M". During a riot in Belfast, Major Wells ordered him to take down a suspected female IRA informant using supposedly non-lethal plastic bullets. Unbeknownst to M, the round he was provided was intended to be lethal and the target was in fact one of Wells' own informants, who had become a liability. M reveals that the girl is in fact alive; having been secretly saved by undercover MI6 agents and provided a new identity. M enacts poetic justice on Wells by finding the IRA informants as requested - and bringing them to the rendezvous. M and the girl drive off, leaving the pleading man alone with his enemies. The story ends in London, where M nonchalantly asks Moneypenny for his daily schedule.
