The flag of Germany

The Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland) or Germany (German: Deutschland) is a federal state in Central Europe. It consists of sixteen states (Bundesland).

Germany's political beginning was the Holy German-Roman Empire, formed in the 9th century, which was dissolved by Napoleon in 1806. The German Empire was formed in 1871 from the mosaic of several free cities and small principalities, the core of which was the old Kingdom of Prussia. After World War I, Germany became a republic.

In 1933, a brutal National Socialist dictatorship led by Adolf Hitler came to power, and with invasion of Poland in 1939, started World War II. After the defeat, the country was divided among the Allies into occupation zones and its eastern parts were annexed to Poland and the Soviet Union. In 1949, the three western occupation zones formed the Federal Republic of Germany, or West Germany, while the eastern occupation zone formed its own state, called the German Democratic Republic or East Germany.

German reunification took place in 1990, when the states (i.e. federal states, Bundesländer) formed on the former territory of the German Democratic Republic and the combined city-state of Berlin joined the Federal Republic of Germany.

Characters[]

For characters of German nationality, see Category:Germans.

Perhaps due to Bond creator Ian Fleming's experiences during World War II, most notable German characters tend to be villains. These notable villains include Sir Hugo Drax, Dr. Julius No (who is half-Chinese, half-German), Irma Bunt (Literary) and Max Zorin (German-born French national). Many of the villainous underlings are German as well, such as Adolph Gettler, Helga Brandt, Dr. Mortner, Stamper and Dr. Kaufman.
