Belmarsh Prison in No Time to Die

HM Prison Belmarsh is a high security men's prison located in Thamesmead, south-east London, England. The location was first mentioned in Raymond Benson's 2001 novel, Never Dream of Dying, and would subsequently feature prominently in the 2021 James Bond film, No Time To Die.

History[]

No Time to Die (film)[]

Belmarsh, one of the most secure facilities in the United Kingdom, was used to house Ernst Stavro Blofeld following his capture after the bombing of the ruins of MI6 headquarters. Despite the high-security nature of the facility, Blofeld was able to observe and participate in a SPECTRE party in Cuba through his henchman Primo's bionic eye. Blofeld briefly exchanged words with his rival, the secret agent James Bond, before ordering the deployment of a weapon to kill him. Instead, however, the gathered SPECTRE members perished one by one, seemingly due to a sickness to which Bond himself was immune.

Some time later, after escaping Cuba, Bond was tasked with confronting Blofeld at the prison in a vain attempt to garner information from him.

In the process, Bond encountered Madeleine Swann, a former lover he had abandoned due to her apparent affiliation with Blofeld and SPECTRE. Their frigid exchange only further exacerbated the tensions between Bond and Blofeld, whose previous link as erstwhile brothers had apparently led to the latter's zeal for revenge.

Unknown to Bond, he had been exposed to the nanobot technology that had been used to devastate SPECTRE. These microscopic machines were also keyed to Blofeld's genetic signature, and when Bond attacked his rival out of rage, the nanotechnology swiftly killed Blofeld. Despite this setback, Bond was able to halt the machinations of Lyutsifer Safin, who had orchestrated SPECTRE's demise and later threatened the world at large as part of a grand scheme of revenge.

Trivia[]

  • Early No Time to Die trailer footage UI referred to Blofeld having been incarcerated in HM Prison Wakefield, rather than Belmarsh. However, both the trailer and final film feature aerial footage of the latter.
  • Belmarsh is a real prison operated in the United Kingdom. It consists of forty-eight single cells and is widely known as "Hellmarsh" due to persistent and consistent allegations of physical abuse and other human rights violations. True to its use in the film, the prison has housed individuals involved in the world of espionage, including alleged spy Julian Assange and former MI6 agent Richard Tomlinson, who alleged that the agency held a "license to kill," something later confirmed by Head of MI6 Richard Dearlove in public hearings.
