Iona Havelock (Greek: Ιωνα Αβελοκ) is the wife of marine archaeologist Sir Timothy Havelock and the mother of Melina Havelock. She appears briefly in the 1981 James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, portrayed by Toby Robins.
Biography[]
While operating in the Ionian Sea, off the west coast of Greece, the British spy ship St. Georges is sunk by an old sea mine which is hauled up in its fishing nets. The ship was equipped with ATAC (Automatic Targeting Attack Communicator); a device which controls and co-ordinates Britain's nuclear submarine fleet. Marine archaeologist, Sir Timothy Havelock, is hired by the British Secret Service to locate the wreck of St. Georges. In a bid to steal the ATAC and deliver it to the Soviets, smuggler Aris Kristatos has the Havelocks murdered by Cuban hitman Hector Gonzales. However, this ultimately failed as Gonzales failed to kill all three members of the Havelock family. He opened fire when Melina went below decks to feed their pet parrot Max, which shielded her from the barrage. Upon hearing the staccato blasts, she emerged above deck to see what was going on, only to find the corpses of her parents, driving her to seek revenge against whomever did this. This also got to the attention of James Bond, whose agency MI6 had originally contracted Sir Timothy to find the shipwreck.
Trivia[]
- Iona was Greek by origin, but would hold dual British citizenship through her marriage to Sir Timothy. The actress playing her was actually Canadian.
