James Bond Jr. refers to two different side-scrolling, single-player handheld electronic LCD video games: a vehicular game released by Systema UK Ltd in 1992[2] and an on-foot game created by Tiger Electronics in 1993.[1] Both tie-in games were launched to capitalize on the 1991 spin-off animated television series, of the same name.
Plot and gameplay[]
Both game variants are based on the 1991–92 animated television series, James Bond Jr., and follow the adventures of the eponymous character. Due to their rudimentary design, neither game is capable of a fleshed-out story. Tiger opted to create an on-foot shooter game, where the objective is to evade traps, collecting "Q briefcase" equipment, and defeating enemies such as Dr. Derange and Jaws, before a bomb explodes. Systema, on the other hand, developed a vehicular shooter focusing on James Bond Jr.'s car, where the objective was to shoot enemy vehicles whilst avoiding obstacles.
In both variants, the different elements of the game were printed on the LCD screen. Static images then light up individually in front of the background that represent characters and objects, similar to numbers on a digital clock. Consequently, sprite movement and gameplay was limited. Despite differences in design, they both came in a handheld form-factor, with a centrally-located LCD screen, flanked by directional controls on the left and action buttons to the right.
