Bond observing the plant's central hub during "Solar".
The Janus Solar base (also known as the Pan African Power solar plant) is the environment for the final battle in GoldenEye 007 for the Wii and GoldenEye 007: Reloaded.
Background[]
The Janus Solar base was a facility in North-Western Nigeria. It was used as a ground facility for the last Goldeneye satellite in orbit. The base itself has a main control tower, otherwise known as the Cradle, and a large amount of heliostats positioned in front of the tower reflecting sunlight to a focus point at the top. The base also has 3 cooling towers in an underground facility to keep the main power generators stable from the large amount of focused sunlight they receive.
It's also possible that it might have a runway or someplace for aircraft to take off and land from, since the base has a squadron of Little Bird helicopters, both transport and attack variants. It's also hinted that it has a flight of cargo planes in a radio transmission from their staging area in Statue Park.
The Cradle control tower has a vertical spire and a rear support spire at an angle, and a horseshoe shaped designed structure that is being suspended high above the ground from 2 supports coming from the main spire. The main spire has the main focusing mirror at the top and presumably a transmitter overlooking the main base, a control room a few floors beneath it, and an antenna at the front of the tower that overhangs from the control room, also overlooking the main solar base. Inside the outer structure of the tower there are several control rooms, one of which is used to control the Goldeneye satellite. There's also a gantry area that can be used to cross to the transmitter room from the outer structure.
Destruction[]
The base goes critical when Trevelyan accidentally detonates explosive charges Bond planted on the cooling towers, The satellite however is still programmed to fire on London and Bond defends Natalya while she attempts to destabilise its orbit. Meanwhile a ray of focused sunlight is being fired from the focusing mirror at the outer structure, which Bond and Natalya are in, and is panning towards the main control room. Natalya manages to temporarily shut down the entire system, stopping the focus mirror and temporarily disables the Goldeneye satellite. However Trevelyan is in the transmitter room using an override to regain control of the satellite and continue its mission to fire on London.
Bond reaches the outside gantry and starts to cross over to the transmitter room where Trevelyan currently is. Trevelyan manages to reactivate the focus mirror and fires focused sunlight onto the gantry, destroying some parts of it in an attempt to stop Bond in his tracks. Bond manages to reach Trevelyan where a brief fight ensues and ends with Bond being thrown into a small pit. He manages to escape but not in time to stop Trevelyan from realigning the satellites orbit.
Bond realising he cant get back to Natalya to disable the satellite, decides to overload the system completely in an effort to destroy the Cradle once and for all, by getting down to the antenna to use the console there. He heads down to the lower control room where the elevator to the antenna is and encounters Trevelyan. A gunfight ensues between the two, as well as multiple soldiers entering the room and a Little Bird helicopter hovering outside by balconies, which also attack Bond. Trevelyan eventually retreats from the room, and the helicopter flies away giving Bond an opportunity to get into the elevator and head down to the antenna.
Upon finally reaching the antenna Bond attempts to use the last working console, but Trevelyan catches up with him and they both have a brawl on the platform. They both knock each others pistols out their hands and both scramble to get them. They get to their feet but an explosion causes some pipes to fall in front of Trevelyan and thee whole platform shifts. They both hang off the edge of the platform and start to climb back on, Bond is the first to get back on and dashes for the control console to reprogram the satellite's course and set it to crash on the Solar base.
Trevelyan then manages to get back on and Bond gets in one final shot on him, sending him over the edge down to the ground. Natalya then arrives in a helicopter and Bond leaps from the antenna to get onboard, just in time as the antenna starts to explode. They fly around the tower watching it blow up and then fly away whilst watching the satellite coming in to crash. The entire base is rendered destroyed and Trevelyans plan to use the Goldeneye is finished.
