Johnny Calhoun was the base manager of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) rocket launch site on Wallops Island, Virginia. The character served as a minor ally in Anthony Horowitz's 2015 James Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis.
Biography[]
Trigger Mortis[]
Johnny Calhoun represented the civilian and scientific side of the NRL rocket launch site on Wallops Island, Virginia. He was a West Point graduate, employed by the Glenn L. Martin aerospace manufacturing company who had provided the majority of the engineers working for the Vanguard Operations Group (VOG).[1] He is physically described as slim, boyish with a crew cut, an easy smile and Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses.[1]
During 1957[2], three days before the launch of a Vanguard space rocket, he welcomed British Secret Service agent James Bond to Wallops Island, during the spy's investigation into a SMERSH plot to sabotage the U.S. space program. He attended the Bond's unproductive meeting with the base's intransigent United States Navy Liaison and Project Officer, Captain Lawrence. He sympathetically escorted 007 from the premises, surreptitiously filling him in on recent events at the base - including the recent murder of NRL supervisor (and saboteur), Thomas Keller. Later that day, an agent of SMERSH operative Jason Sin attempts to keep 007 at his motel, leaving the spy with a phony telephone call from Calhoun suggesting he has information to provide. Bond sees through the ruse, but stays the night anyway, narrowly surviving the resulting assassination attempt. Calhoun is later present at the launch, subsequent malfunction and destruction of the Vanguard.
