- "And for dessert, the 'pièce de résistance'... la bombe surprise."
"That looks fantastic! What's in it?"
"But then there would be no 'surprise', would there, madame?" - ― Mr. Wint and Tiffany Case
La Bombe Surprise was an improvised explosive device (IED) disguised as a bombe glacée ice cream dessert. The assassination weapon appeared in the 1971 James Bond film, Diamonds Are Forever.
History[]
Diamonds Are Forever (film)[]
Employed by assassin duo Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd, the explosive device consisted of four sticks of explosive, tied to an analogue timer and detonator, and powered by two 9v batteries. A hard, hollow shell was placed over the device, disguising the time-bomb as a bombe glacée dessert covered in whipped cream. On-board a cruise ship bound for Britain, James Bond and Tiffany Case are served the Bombe by Wint and Kidd, posing as room-service stewards.
After recognizing the smell of Wint's distinctive cologne, 007 is attacked by the pair of assassins, although he swiftly turned the tables on them, causing Kidd to hurl himself overboard after being set aflame. As Wint attempts to garotte Bond with his necklace, Tiffany hurls the dessert at him in an attempt to assist Bond; only for it to smash on the ground, revealing the bomb inside. 007 gains the upper-hand, ties the device to Wint's coat tails and hurls him overboard just as it detonates.
