Kamran Shah and his Mujahideen resistance fighters

The Mujahideen (Arab. مجاهدين‎, muǧāhidīn; also romanized as mujahidin or mujahedin) is a term used in connection with Islam, and usually refers to Islamist fighters or Islamist guerrilla groups. Thusly any Islamic resistance fighter- and/or terrorist groups may refer to themselves as Mujahideen.

The term became popular in the West during the Soviet–Afghan War. The various guerrilla groups that fought in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989 against the Soviet troops and the communist government they supported called themselves mujahideen. They received financial and material support primarily from the United States, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The arms deliveries and the training of many fighters were organized primarily by the US CIA and the Pakistani secret service ISI. The CIA invested billions of dollars in the Islamist insurgents as part of the covert "Operation Cyclone".

Following the withdrawal of Soviet troops in 1989, disagreements between the various Mujahideen groups would ensue in three civil wars fought in the 1990s.

The Mujahideen play a significant part in the 1987 James Bond movie, The Living Daylights.

Then, Soviet troops arrive and Bond realizes that the Mujahideen are the ones delivering the opium to Koskov. Bond confronts Kamran about this, with the latter saying its the Snow Leopards bringing it, that he does not care what is done with the opium, they desperately need arms.

Kara and Bond then spot Koskov bringing the diamonds (that were hidden amongst a phony heart transplant), with Bond explaining to Karman what Koskov and co. are doing is harming the Mujahideen. Bond proposes that he will sabotage Koskov's delivery of drugs and Karman agrees to bring plastic explosives and a timed detonator for it.
