Number Five was the code number of a unidentified operative and board member of the secretive criminal organisation, SPECTRE. A minor antagonist portrayed by the late British actor, Philip Stone, he appeared briefly in the 1965 James Bond film, Thunderball. To date, across the franchise as a whole, there have been three individuals who have held the number "5".

Biography[]

Number Five was a high-ranking British SPECTRE operative present at their cabinet meeting in Paris, France. The third man to give his report to the Board and its leader, Ernst Blofeld, he reported that the criminal organisation earned £250,000 as a consultation fee for the Great Train Robbery of 1963.

Behind the Scenes[]

Like the theft of the Portrait of the Duke of Wellington in the 1962 film, Dr. No, a timely reference to the recent British Train Robbery was inserted into the script of Thunderball at the last minute. The £2.6 million train robbery (the equivalent of approximately £54.9 million in 2019[1]) was committed on Thursday 8th August 1963 at Bridego Railway Bridge, Ledburn near Mentmore in Buckinghamshire, England. The bulk of the stolen money was not recovered. Of the 17 full gang members, 11 men were sentenced (although 2 were later exonerated) to terms up to 30 years.
