Ransome, was the fictional Head of the American Secret Service, "CIA" (possibly also simultaneously the FBI etc). Portrayed by American actor William Holden, the character appeared in the 1967 parody spy film, Casino Royale.

He has a habit of introducing himself with a stream of "alphabet soup", including all the organisations and branches he is involved with.

Biography[]

Ransome appears first at Sir James Bond's residence along with the heads of several major intelligence agencies - M of the British MI6, Soviet KGB representative Smernov, and French Deuxième Bureau representative Le Grand. The Red Chinese are not at the meeting, although they feature later. Sir James was a legendary spy, who has been retired for some fifty years. All of the visitors implore Bond to come out of retirement to deal with SMERSH who have been eliminating agents: Bond spurns all their pleas. When Bond continues to stand firm, his mansion is destroyed by a mortar attack at the orders of M, who himself is killed in the explosion, possibly with Smernov and Le Grand. His mansion destroyed, Bond has little choice but to take on the mission.

Ransome reappears at Casino Royale, again spouting the names of various alphabet agencies and abbreviations. He appears late, and offers assistance, which soon appears in the form of Cowboys and Indians who parachute in from various aircraft.

He is killed, along with a number of other people in the atomic explosion caused by Jimmy Bond's pill.

Trivia[]

  • Ransome seems to be about the nearest equivalent that the 1967 Casino Royale universe has to a Felix Leiter character.
  • It is unclear which organisation(s) Ransome belongs to. The CIA is mentioned, but with a host of other ones in an alphabet soup.
  • Ransome appears late at Casino Royale, a satirical nod to the Americans' late arrival in the two world wars.
