The flag of the Russian Federation

Russia (Росси́я / Rossiya), officially the Russian Federation (Росси́йская Федера́ция / Rossiyskaya Federatsiya), is a federal state located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. It is a federal state consisting of 83 federal subjects. The country's capital and largest city is Moscow.

Russia is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and is a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. It is one of the five countries officially recognized as a nuclear-weapon state and, together with the United States, has the world's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons.

The origins of the country dates to Eastern Slavs that began to spread to the territory of Russia around the 5th and 6th centuries. A state called Kievan Rus emerged in the 8th century, which adopted Christianity in 988. Kievan Rus was followed by the Principality of Moscow. In the 18th century, a much larger Russian Empire was established, stretching from Poland to the Pacific Ocean and across to Alaska. During the time of the empire, Russia became a global power.

The country underwent a revolution during the First World War in 1917, that lead to the Bolsheviks (later Communist Party of the Soviet Union) coming to power. According to the constitution approved in July 1918, the state was officially named the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Russian SFSR or RSFSR). It was also called Soviet Russia to distinguish it from the imperial and republican Russia that preceded it. Soviet Russia, together with the Soviet republics of Ukraine, Belarus and Transcaucasia, which were taken over and controlled by the Bolsheviks, formed the Soviet Union, of which Russia was the leading part.

The current Russian Federation became independent from the Soviet Union when it dissolved in 1991. Russia is the successor state of the Soviet Union, which, per 1993 Constitution, is a semi-presidential republic.

In Bond series, it's been featured in GoldenEye (where James Bond demolishes parts of St. Petersburg in a tank), Everything Or Nothing (where the final showdown takes place in Moscow) and Quantum of Solace (where Bond goes to Kazan, where he confronts Vesper Lynd's former lover, Yusef Kabira),
