Biography[]
Early Life[]
- "Zoltan was never sure whether the man was really smiling or not. But he had known him long enough to realise that he probably wasn't."
- ― Blood Fever, Chapter 9: "La Casa Polipo".
His name and history unknown, "Smiler" was a former Roman Catholic seminarian from Glasgow, Scotland. Physically abused by Jesuit priests, his life of crime began when he beat one of his superiors to death with a cane and joined a local gang.[2] At some point he was mutilated by his old gang for selling them out to the police - cutting him from the corners of his mouth up to the ears, leaving a scar in the shape of a smile. He would bear the scars of this attack for the rest of his life, earning him his nickname.[3] He would later become a crewman of infamous pirate Zoltan The Magyar, before being introduced to Italian millionaire and Millenaria secret society head, Count Ugo Carnifex. Greedy and treacherous, Smiler began enthusiastically working for said society, becoming fluent in Latin and adding to his already mutilated body the organisation's insignia - a pair of letter "M"s - tattooed on rear of both his hands.[1]
