Space Wolves or killersats were fictional American anti-satellite (ASAT) satellites. They appeared in John Gardner's second James Bond continuation novel, For Special Services (1982).
History[]
The Space Wolves were satellites which were designed to destroy other satellites using directed energy weapons and their superlative chase capability. By 1982, despite official denials, the United States had at least twenty laser-equipped killersats already in orbit, disguised as weather satellites. They also possessed the capability of launching over two hundred of these weapons in a matter of minutes. The satellites were controlled from North American Defence Command (NORAD) Headquarters, deep within the Cheyenne Mountains of Colorado. By the year 1985, these weapons would be controlled and operated at Peterson Air Force Base through See-Sok, an abbreviation of the "North American Air Defence Command’s Consolidation Space Operations Centre".
In 1982, the satellites became the target of the resurgent criminal organisation SPECTRE as part of their "Operation Heavenly Wolf" (also known as "project HOUND") – a scheme to penetrate NORAD Headquarters using hypnotic ice-cream, and steal computer tapes related to the satellites. The plan was foiled when the hypnotised 007 recovered during the raid, rallying the base staff.
