The Chameleon was the third episode of the 1991 animated television series, James Bond Jr, produced by Murakami-Wolf-Swenson and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Animation. Written by Jeffery Scott, the episode first aired on US television on 18th September 1991.

Plot[]

The episode opens at an American military base during a heavy rainstorm. The base is infiltrated by a shape-shifting thief known as The Chameleon, who convinces the personnel to hand over a general's uniform. However, the rain unexpectedly causes his shape-shifting implants to short-circuit; blowing his cover and forcing him to flee with the uniform. At Warfield Academy, the students prepare to depart on a field trip to Washington D.C. As James Bond Jr. and I.Q. pack, the inventor explains how he stitched a parachute into the aerophobic Trevor Noseworthy's long underwear and allows Bond to take his cassette player (with a built-in homing device) with him. Tracy eagerly looks forward to seeing the sights with Bond, but is unexpectedly grounded by her expired passport.

Meanwhile, Chameleon returns to his surgeon for repairs; but is discovered by a soldier searching for him. The villain subdues him and discovers - to his chagrin - that a lieutenant named Shelley Kaysing is going to inform the Pentagon of the uniform theft. The Warfield students happen across Kaysing at Dulles International Airport, who offers them a lift into Washington in her jeep. With an hour until her meeting, she takes them sightseeing. At the Washington Monument, in the guise of an old lady, Chameleon attempts to murder Kaysing and Bond by defenestration. The students save the lieutenant and attempt to rescue Bond by lowering Trevor out of the window. Bond uses Noseworthy's hidden parachute to glide onto Chameleon's van.

He follows the villains to their hotel room, where the shape-shifter reveals his intention to steal a prototype U.S. army exoskeleton. Bond crashes the meeting disguised as room service and the Chameleon flees through the hotel. With the authorities approaching and no means of escape, the villain bumps into Trevor and assumes his identity. The Chameleon then attacks two police officers as a distraction and escapes; leaving the real student to take the blame. Bond goes with Kaysing to warn the Pentagon, but they are both too late to stop Chameleon from stealing the exoskeleton. After attempts to destroy it prove fruitless, Bond seemingly abandons her; locking her in the testing range with the machine. He returns with a tank and forces the villain to drop her, engaging in a brief shoot-out which concludes with Chameleon accidentally triggering the building's fire suppression system. Water pours into the vehicle; shorting out his implants, tossing him out and under the heavy machine. He is subsequently taken into custody. The episode ends with the group resuming their tour of the city.
