- "They took me over to make-up and shaved my head, put scars all over my face and other make-up and we went back to the studio floor and they filmed me. In fact, we went back and forwards several times, applying and removing different make-up and filming the results to judge the best procedure to use when Donald became available. Of course, it was a proper screen test and I guess the rushes were sent to Donald Pleasence, but fortunately I still have those photos."
- ― Tony Teiger
Tony Teiger (1936-2019) was a Prop Master who worked on You Only Live Twice and Tomorrow Never Dies.
He was used for make up tests for Ernst Stavro Blofeld's designs, as Donald Pleasence was unavailable.
Bond Involvement[]
While working as the standby props for You Only Live Twice, Tony was approached by producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, who noted that Tony bore a certain resemblance to Donald Pleasence, who was joining their film, to replace Jan Werich as the film's villain, Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Tony was used for make up tests, so the producers could experiment with the look that Pleasence's Blofeld would have in the movie, which required them to shave Tony's entire head and apply various facial scars to him, until Pleasence became available.
Tony would return to the Bond films thirty years later, now as Prop Master for Tomorrow Never Dies. While working on that film, Tony suggested to the new Bond producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, that it might be time that James Bond sported a larger gun, resulting in Bond replacing his iconic Walther PPK with the newer model, Walther P99.
Trivia[]
- Tony would become close friends with Sean Connery, and would often play golf together in their personal lives. Tony would say that Connery's James Bond remained his personal favourite.
