The United States Air Force, or USAF, is the branch of the United States Armed Forces responsible for air warfare. Initially part of the U.S. Army, today's USAF was formed as an independent branch on September 18, 1947 under the National Security Act of 1947. It is the second most recently created branch in the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as the most sophisticated air force in the world.
