The Uzi is a open-bolt, blowback-operated submachine gun/machine pistol. The weapon is primarily manufactured by Israeli IWI (Israeli Weapon Industries; formerly IMI/Israeli Military Industries), but has been produced by other countries and manufacturers with and without license.

Uziel Gal designed the Uzi shortly after the independence of the State of Israel in 1948. The Uzi was approved for use by the Israeli Defense Forces in 1951 and was first used in combat in 1956. Gal did not want the weapon to be named after him, but his wishes were ignored.

Besides the original "full-size" variation, other (James Bond-relevant) variations include Mini Uzi (shortened variant of the full-sized) and the Micro Uzi (ultra-compact design minimized to absolute smallest proportions possible).

To date, the Uzi has been sold for a total of two billion US dollars, and is used/has been used by the military or police forces of 90 different countries.
