The Yakovlev Yak-38 (Russian: Яковлев Як-38; NATO reporting name: "Forger") was a Soviet jet fighter aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) operations. A fictionalized version of the aircraft appeared in the 2004 James Bond video game, Everything or Nothing.

History[]

At least one Soviet-era Yakovlev Yak-38 was stored in a nuclear bunker under the Kremlin in Moscow. Over a decade later, it was utilized by ex-KGB officer turned businessman, Nikolai Diavolo, in his quest to conquer Russia. Armed with a pair of missile launchers fixed on pylons under each wing, the Yak-38 was was also equipped with two nose-mounted machine guns and was modified to carry a single bomb with a metal-eating Nanotech payload.

After James Bond thwarts Diavolo's plans of launching Nanotech ICBMs, the villain and his subordinate, Dr. Katya Nadanova, attempt to escape in a Yak-38 through a freight elevator shaft. He attempts to kill Bond as he makes for the surface in an adjacent shaft. 007 damages the aircraft by firing at its missile launchers and Nanotech bomb - causing Diavolo to lose control and crash on Bond's elevator platform. The leaking bomb eats through the metal platform; resulting in the plane falling down the shaft. While Nadanova is assumed to have been killed in the impact, Diavolo manages to eject to safety.
